Free PDF to Markdown
Convert a text PDF to Markdown in your browser. No upload. No AI model.
Choose a PDF with selectable text. A browser worker reads the text layer and rebuilds headings, paragraphs, lists, quotations and simple tables as Markdown. The PDF stays on your device and no AI provider sees it. Free and anonymous users spend 1 PE for each page converted successfully.

Sample PDFs and reviewed results
Reference results checked against each fictional PDF and generated with our download exporter. Fresh local conversions depend on the PDF text layer and reading order; review your result before using it.
A useful PDF to Markdown test contains several text styles rather than one plain paragraph. The prepared document includes a title, section headings, body paragraphs, a numbered list, a bulleted list, a quotation, a short code example, and a simple table. It also contains page numbers and repeated page furniture. The local parser reads the PDF text layer and uses font size, position, spacing, and repeated patterns to infer Markdown structure. It does not inspect screenshots or ask a language model to rewrite the content.
The expected result is an editable Markdown document with ATX headings, list markers, paragraph breaks, fenced code where the layout is clear, and page-break comments between selected pages. We check that the words remain in the source order and that the parser does not invent missing text. The output is useful for notes, search, documentation, and further editing. It is not a pixel-perfect copy of the PDF, and a complex visual table may still need manual cleanup.

The output stays beside the evidence
Dynamite Docs keeps the source and structured result in one review workspace. Infer document fields and repeating rows, correct values against the page, inspect warnings and export the accepted result.
This is more than a plain OCR transcript. The result separates fields, line items, totals and notes so a person can check the structure before sending data to Excel, CSV, JSON, Google Sheets, Google Drive, a webhook or the API.
Connect an AI provider and get a key
This PDF to Markdown tool runs locally and needs no AI key. Scans, images and structured extraction use the selected AI route. Open AI & Processing, choose Connect Provider and follow the provider link to create a key. Several providers offer free developer allowances. Availability and limits come from the provider.
Paste the key once, verify it and select a model for the run. Provider keys are encrypted before storage. Find a provider and key or follow the setup guide.
What the editable Markdown contains
- Headings, paragraphs, lists, quotations, and simple code blocks become Markdown based on the PDF text layer and font relationships.
- Selected pages stay in source order and use an HTML page-break comment so downstream Markdown tools can keep the boundary when useful.
- The Text viewer opens the result as editable UTF-8 Markdown, with copy and .md download controls inside the workspace.
- The parser preserves source wording rather than summarizing or rewriting it. Structural markers are inferred from font size, spacing and position, so the reviewer can edit a heading level without changing the underlying text.
- Repeated headers, footers and page numbers may be removed when their pattern is clear. Page-break comments remain available when a knowledge base, citation workflow or later editor needs to trace content back to the PDF.
What the local parser can preserve
PDFs store text at page coordinates rather than as semantic headings or paragraphs. The parser reconstructs common Markdown patterns from those coordinates without rewriting the words.
- Headings: # Title and ## Section
- Paragraphs: Reading-order text with blank lines
- Lists: - Bullets and 1. numbered items
- Quotes: > Indented source text
- Code: Fenced blocks when font and spacing agree
- Pages: <!-- PAGE_BREAK --> markers
- Simple tables: Pipe-delimited Markdown rows
Extract first, then decide what to keep
- Upload and parse one PDF without creating an account.
- Review the generated Markdown beside the source document.
- Copy and Markdown download are available from the Text viewer after conversion.
- Hobby and above add stored files, batch jobs and connected exports. Email intake requires Pro or Ultra. File and processing limits depend on your plan.

Text-based PDFs work best
Try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer. If you cannot select text, the page probably needs OCR. Also check reading order on columns, sidebars, tables, footnotes, and documents with unusual embedded fonts.
Cases that need manual review
- A scanned PDF has pixels but no useful text layer, so the local parser stops and asks for an OCR-capable model instead of returning an empty file.
- Multi-column layouts can interleave sentences when the PDF stores characters in a different order from the way a person reads the page.
- Charts, formulas, embedded pictures, decorative layout, and complicated spanning tables are not reconstructed by the local text parser.
- A custom embedded font can expose incomplete character maps, producing missing symbols or unexpected characters even though the page looks normal.
- Headers that change slightly on every page may not look repetitive to the parser and can remain inside the Markdown body.
- Move a report into Obsidian or another notes app
- Create editable documentation from a text PDF
- Prepare clean text before structured extraction
- Copy selected PDF pages into a knowledge base
Choose the page for the job
Use PDF to Markdown when the source has selectable text and the desired result is readable, editable prose for notes, documentation, search or a knowledge base. Test text selection first, then review heading hierarchy, paragraph order, lists, quotations, page furniture and page boundaries after conversion. For a two-column page, read the Markdown from start to finish rather than judging isolated sentences. Use Image to Markdown for a scan, photo or screenshot because pixels require OCR. Use PDF to JSON when software needs named fields and row arrays. Choose the PDF Table Extractor when rows, columns and numeric integrity matter more than narrative order. The local converter does not reproduce page design, charts or complex spanning tables. It runs in the browser and uses 1 PE per successfully converted page on Free and anonymous access; OCR and structured extraction follow the selected provider and plan limits.
Questions about Free PDF to Markdown
Local PDF to Markdown uses no AI model. Free and anonymous users spend 1 PE per successfully converted page. The browser parser accepts text-based PDFs up to 50 MB and 500 pages.
Does the PDF leave my browser?
No. For this local workflow the browser reads the file and runs the PDF parser in a dedicated worker. It does not upload the PDF to an extraction endpoint or AI provider.
Can it convert a scanned PDF?
Not with the local parser. A scanned page is an image and has no useful text layer. If the parser finds no readable text, choose an OCR-capable model explicitly.
Will tables and columns be exact?
Simple tables and single-column pages usually produce the cleanest Markdown. Spanning cells, dense columns, formulas, charts, and unusual reading order can need manual edits.
Does local PDF to Markdown use my Free allowance?
Yes. Each successfully converted page costs 1 PE for Free and anonymous users. The browser sends only the page count, file hash, and idempotency key to the usage ledger. It never sends the PDF or Markdown text.
What should I review after local conversion?
Read the full output in order. Check heading levels, list nesting, paragraph breaks, columns, quotations, repeated headers, footnotes and simple tables. Compare any missing symbol or unusual character with the PDF, especially when the file uses a custom embedded font.
