Free tool to turn PDF documents and scans into Excel spreadsheets

Turn a native or scanned PDF into Excel rows without cleaning up a broken copy-paste.

Upload one PDF and let AI OCR rebuild its tables as editable rows. The PDF stays beside the result, so you can catch a repeated header, a shifted amount or a bad date before downloading the Excel workbook. Native PDFs and scanned pages both work.

How does PDF to Excel conversion work?

Dynamite Docs reads digital and scanned PDFs, turns document fields and tables into editable Excel sheets, and keeps the source open while you check dates, numbers, and row boundaries.

Excel export can keep document fields and repeating rows on separate sheets. Check the row count, cell types, and control totals before using the workbook downstream.

How do you convert a PDF document into an Excel spreadsheet with formulas and typed columns?

Use PDF to Excel when the destination is a spreadsheet workbook and the source contains rows, columns, or report headers you need to sort, filter, calculate, or join. Begin by confirming which table on the document matters and noting the printed control total or row count before upload.

During review, inspect header depth, row alignment, date parsing, sign conventions for debits and credits, blank cells, and repeated page footers. Decide whether subtotals belong as static records or should be recalculated using Excel formulas, and verify that document-level facts like report period or account name remain distinct from repeating data rows.

Use the PDF Table Extractor when the primary challenge is isolating multiple distinct tables across pages. Choose PDF to CSV when the receiving system requires one flat, sheetless import file. For narrative reports or text-layer documents without financial tables, use PDF to Markdown. When recurring monthly schedules require stable column definitions, team review, or direct export to cloud drives, move to a saved extraction workflow.

The output stays beside the evidence

Dynamite Docs keeps the source and structured result in one review workspace. Infer document fields and repeating rows, correct values against the page, inspect warnings and export the accepted result.

This is more than a plain OCR transcript. The result separates fields, line items, totals and notes so a person can check the structure before sending data to Excel, CSV, JSON, Google Sheets, Google Drive, a webhook or the API.

What the Excel-ready tables contains

  • Excel keeps tabular records in cells so users can sort, filter, total, and apply formulas after download.
  • Dates and amounts are exported as typed values when review confirms their meaning, while source labels remain text.
  • Several detected tables may produce separate result tables; select the table that belongs in the workbook before export.
  • Document-level facts such as report title, account, period and currency can stay on a separate sheet instead of being repeated on every data row. This keeps filters and pivot tables from treating metadata as transactions.
  • The workbook favors usable data over visual imitation. Decorative borders, logos, charts and page furniture are not recreated. Merged labels are translated into explicit headers or context columns when the reviewer decides they matter.
  • Source order and page context remain available during review. If a total, footnote or continuation row is removed, the exported table should still be checked against the PDF record count and control total.

Check PDF tables before Excel export

The extractor separates columns and rows while preserving useful document-level fields for a clean Excel handoff.

  • Table headers: Date, reference, description, amount
  • Rows: One record per detected entry
  • Dates: 2026-08-28
  • Numbers: 1,284.50
  • Multiple tables: Kept as separate result tables
  • Document fields: Account, period, report title

Extract first, then decide what to keep

  1. Upload and extract one PDF without creating an account.
  2. Review low-confidence values beside the source document.
  3. Excel, CSV and JSON downloads are included on Free after signup, within Free plan limits.
  4. Starter and above add stored files, batch jobs and connected exports. Email intake requires Pro or Scale. File and processing limits depend on your plan.

Review merged cells and page breaks

PDFs store visual positions, not spreadsheet structure. Check repeated headers, merged cells, wrapped descriptions, totals, and tables that continue across pages before downloading Excel. Prove the row count and key totals against the source, then save the reviewed workbook rather than an unchecked first pass.

Cases that need manual review

  • Merged PDF headers can become extra columns or shift the first data row if the table boundary is unclear.
  • Repeated page headers and footers can appear as records until they are removed during review.
  • Parentheses, trailing minus signs, and locale-specific separators can change whether Excel reads an amount as positive, negative, or text.
  • A multi-column page can have a text layer whose reading order jumps between columns, even though the PDF looks correct on screen.
  • Dates such as 04/09/2026 are ambiguous without locale or document context. Automatic type conversion can silently reverse day and month.
  • Subtotals mixed with detail rows can be counted twice in a formula or pivot table unless they are labeled or removed before export.
  • Move a monthly PDF report into a workbook
  • Recover rows from a scanned table
  • Check a difficult PDF before processing a folder
  • Prepare a source-checked schedule for analysis or import
  • Separate report metadata from repeating spreadsheet records

Questions about Free tool to turn PDF documents and scans into Excel spreadsheets

The 28-day Free trial includes 25 page-equivalents per month shared by hosted and own-key processing, 5 hosted pages per document, and 5 documents per day. Anonymous trials have separate daily limits.

Does PDF to Excel work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. The pipeline applies OCR to scanned pages before it infers table columns and rows. Scan quality still affects the amount of review needed.

Can it find more than one table?

Yes. A PDF can produce multiple result tables. You can review each table and remove unrelated fields before export.

Will the Excel file look exactly like the PDF?

No. The goal is clean, usable data rather than a visual copy of the page. Complex formatting, charts, and decorative layout are not reproduced.

How do I check a PDF to Excel conversion?

Compare the exported header, row count and control total with the source. Check repeated headers, blank cells, negative signs, decimal separators and ambiguous dates. For a multi-page table, inspect the first and last row on each page boundary before using formulas or importing the workbook elsewhere.
